Bad Meaning Good
After I received The Bad Seed in the mail, I took it to work with me. I showed it to a coworker who is a lover of all books. As soon as she saw the cover, she started to giggle. She read the entire book, while I stood there. Keep in mind, that I hadn't even read it yet! Before this coworker even finished the book she said, "I have to get this book!" This is an adult, with no small kids. That is how good this book is! It is definitely not Jory John's first time at the rodeo. He is a New York Times bestselling author. Then to top it off, the fabulous illustrations are done by Pete Oswald, who was a designer on several of your favorite kid's movies.
This baaaad seed is up to no good. "I never put things where they belong. I'm late to everything. I tell long jokes with no punch lines. I never wash my hands. Or my feet." He wasn't always bad. There were good times, before the sunflower debacle. One day, the crabby seed decided he was going to turn things around. He's not perfect, but he is really trying to do good. Let's just say this story ends with a smile.
I recently had a discussion with my daughter, after she hung her head and said, "I'm bad." This book is so perfect for that discussion! You can choose to do the right thing, or you can choose to knock over the cute little kid on the playground.(This didn't actually happen, but could!) You aren't bad, you just made the wrong choice. The seed made a conscious decision to work on being good. This story is so much fun, with an awesome message.
***I included pictures of our sunflower craft. It's so simple and cute!
